Car Wheels question by rugger5746: Why does the rotation of car wheels and propellers seem to reverse after time or certain RPMs?
Have you ever watched the wheels of a car or a prop plane as it starts up? They travel clockwise at first, and then seem to reverse after a while. Is it an optical illusion with the RPMs?
This happens in reality, too. Get on the highway and watch the wheels. Be safe.

I can understand why this happens on film or video. Does it really happen with the naked eye, too?
Is there an technical term for this “wagon wheel” effect? Maybe it would be called ‘aliasing,’ because it results from the sampling of the image at a certain frame rate. You can produce the effect with a strobe light, too.
When the rotation rate is close to the strobe or frame rate (or an integer multiple of it) successive images catch the propeller in nearly the same orientation but on a different rotation. That gives the impression it moved only a small distance forward or backward when it really moved a little more than a full rotation or a little less than a full rotation.
